Airthrie News – September/October 2020

Standards CQC

In this month’s articles we would like to talk about Regulation 18: Staffing and Regulation 19: Fit and proper persons employed

Staffing was established as Regulation 17 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulation 2014 with the intention of ensuring that providers deploy enough suitably qualified, competent and experienced staff to enable them to meet all requirements. This includes ensuring that there are enough skilled and experienced staff to meet the needs of the individuals using the service. Here at Airthrie we ensure that we have enough staff on shift who can meet the needs of our service users, we ensure that if anyone is unable to attend their shift suitable cover is provided and that Staff are given support, training, supervision and appraisals to help them develop professionally.

Fit and proper persons employed was established as Regulation 19 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulation 2014 with the intention of making sure that providers only employ “fit and proper” staff. This includes ensuring providers have robust recruitment procedures in place, undertake any relevant checks e.g.: DBS and that they have a procedure for ongoing monitoring of staff, They should also have appropriate arrangements in place for staff who are no longer fit to carry out duties required by their role. Here at Airthrie when recruiting staff we look at their experience and qualifications and use this to decide if they are the best fit for the role, we also ensure applicants have the appropriate documents and are DBS checked, Staff are also monitored through regular supervision.
